Positive: Chantegrel is part of a big attractive house, most of which is lived in by the owner; at the other end is a smaller rental property, and there is a further separate rental building. It has a beautiful location in the Dordogne hills, and comes with a large terrace with a wonderful view enhanced in the morning by numerous hot air balloons. The kitchen is well-equipped, though could do with a microwave particularly as the gas hob is a bit erratic. The bedrooms are all a good size and ensuite with baths and showers. A particular feature, which the children loved, is the large and attractive swimming pond, complete with tadpoles, frogs and dragonflies, with an environmentally friendly filter system and a stony/shingly beach area well supplied with umbrellas and sun loungers.

Negative: It was (apparently unusually) extremely hot while we were there, and there is no air conditioning or overhead fans. M. Cousquer supplied two standing fans which were pretty inadequate so we purchased our own. The pond is enormous fun, but inevitably with the heat comes a lot of green algae and the sandbag 'steps' were a bit slimy and slippery - not a worry to our grandchildren who had neoprene shoes but glad we brought them. (We were advised not to let the children drink the water... but try telling a four year old to keep their mouth shut! However no great ill effects.) It is worth mentioning that, though it is advertised as a 'private beach', you do share it with the two other rental properties and the owner's family. We shared with some very nice Belgians, who were amazingly tolerant of two young children, but might privately have thought otherwise. A big downside was the extremely noisy construction work going on very close by, which started at about 7am and continued till the afternoon; it rather wrecked the quoted peace and tranquillity, particularly during breakfast. Due to this work, access to the property is diverted a long way round. One further quirky factor, probably more for the benefit of British people, is that three of the bathrooms are incorporated into the bedrooms, rather than having a separate door, which some might find surprising. Finally, the wifi didn't work to start with, but improved towards the end of our stay.

Summary: Lovely property in a wonderful setting with an attractive swimming pond.
